Dec. 1967 |
Left to right; me, Hires, David Johnson. Must have been early in the
evening. We still are well groomed and have clear eyes. Feb.
3, 1968. Olongapo, Philippines. Hires and Johnson were in my
Engineman A-School class at Great Lakes NTC. |

Offloading onto causeway, I
think it's China Beach. If I remember correctly those off-duty got
about 2 hours on the beach with an allocation of 2 beers each. It
was great but unfortunately Dana Delany wasn't there that day. :( |

My favorite band, Blue
Science at D'Wave in Olongapo. These guys could play ANYTHING just
like the original band, outstanding! |
Jake Eckert. Jake
seemed to live in a small structure on the fantail, I have no idea what he
did on the ship, I don't think anyone did! |
Me taking main engine
quarterly readings. Great haircut, huh? |
On the left; Dave Johnson,
on the right Decker. Others unknown except for
Crabtree. |

John Gannon, good man.
John went on to become Deputy Director of the CIA. I heard from him
recently. Thanks John. |
John Gannon again.
John extended his service into the reserves and reached the rank of
Captain, congratulations John. Click

Leo again. In Hong
Kong Leo had a tattoo placed on his hand while he was drunk. When we
looked at it we noticed it was misspelled and read "born to
loose". |
Delivering supplies on the
Mekong river. |
At sea, probably headed to
Guam or the Philippines. |
Mekong River. In the

platform. Not much speed but lots of firepower. |

Me on deck on the Mekong
Delta. We had dozens of walk-in freezers on deck. We delivered
provisions to ships working the river. |
Ships' party in Guam.
The guy "skying" is the skipper, John Dobrosky. When he left the
ship he was replaced by;
Glenn Q. Lane. Yes, G.Q. And we did have lots of practice
drills under his command. Pretty good skipper aside from his insistence
to pull into port without the assistance of tug boats. It was always
an adventure landing with him at the controls. It became a sport to
go on deck and see what kind of damage he would do when pulling into
port. Once, when laying alongside another LST, we did pretty
substantial damage to both ships. Sorry, no pics of GQ. other than
the ones of him in the water on the next page. Lt.
Dobrosky found this site and contacted me recently. He retired from
the Naval Reserves with the rank of Commander and now is apparently
retired and living in Hawaii. |
Swift boat near the
Mekong. 58 days on station providing fuel and water to patrol
boats. Out of sight of land the whole time, ran out of fresh food
after one week. Boring! |

Dennis Weishaar in engineers
quarters. No, we didn't have a phone in the quarters. It was
obtained in some nefarious way and didn't work. |
